It was another weekend of twists and turns in the SPFL Championship, with drama at both ends of the table. Where else could you start rather than at the Balmoral Stadium where Cove Rangers and Partick Thistle played out a thrilling 1-1 draw. The hosts took the lead in the 6th minute through their skipper Mitch Megginson, a well taken strike after controlling it with finesse on his chest. Cove had the best chances of the game through counterattacks despite constant pressure from the Jags, however goalkeeper Jamie Sneddon kept them in the game. Partick had one last chance from a corner in the 5th minute of added time, Sneddon came up for it and sure enough the cross was planted onto Sneddon’s head who glanced it into the bottom corner. There was pandemonium in the away stand with some fans spilling onto the pitch in a moment no Thistle fan will rush to forget. Jags boss Ian McCall described the late equaliser as “the most bizarre thing I’ve ever seen.”

Elsewhere, it was another miserable week for bottom-placed Hamilton on a trip to Hampden to face Queen’s Park. It was four first half goals for the Spiders that were enough to complete the thumping. Goals from Simon Murray and Josh McPake sandwiched in between a Grant Savoury brace were enough to move Queen’s Park up to third.
Ayr United were able to stay at the top of the table with a 2-0 home win over Raith Rovers. A Josh Mullin double either side of half-time were enough to beat a Raith side who struggled to test Charlie Albinson in the Honest Men’s goals. That result now leaves Ayr seven games unbeaten, meanwhile Raith have lost their last three league games and now sit seven points off the promotion playoffs.
Greenock Morton fell two places down to fourth after a draw away to a struggling Arbroath. The ‘Ton took the lead on the stroke of half-time through Lewis McGrattan’s second goal of the season. Shortly after the second half began though, the hosts got back on level terms through midfielder David Gold. Despite slipping down the table, Morton have now gone 10 games unbeaten and sit firmly five points ahead of Partick Thistle in fifth. Arbroath are two points ahead of Hamilton in 10th but are five points adrift in the relegation playoff spot.
Finally, Dundee narrowly defeated Inverness in the Highlands to boost the ‘Dees up to second in the league. A Paul McMullan, who won the SPFL Championship Player of the Month award for November, goal in the 26th minute was enough for Dundee who look like a different team than the one that made that slow start to the season. Caley are in poor form with no league win in seven but only sit six points behind Morton in fourth due to how tight the league is.
